I chose to research this artist due to his huge influence on hip-hop culture that shaped hip-hop to what it is today.

Genre research No.3: Gangster rap
Background information
Gangster rap is very similar to Rap/hip-hop, but is an evolution of it. It has a central focus of gang life and contains a more grime-like style. A lot of artists who produce hip-hop produce gangster rap.
Artists such as the A$AP mob and Taylor gang produce gangster rap, however the figure heads of these gangs are A$AP rocky and Wiz Khalifa who were on the related artists for Hip-hop/rap!
Reasons for choosing this genre
I find the lifestyles of the artists highly intriguing and would enjoy recreating the style of video used in gangster rap videos.

The rock genre is a hugely vast genre consisting of masses of sub-gerne's such as, metal, screamo, hard rock, glam rock, post hardcore etc, even the sub genres have hybrids, for example death metal and hybrids between different genres like rock/trance. However, all of these originally spanned from rock 'n' roll which was coined in the 1940's-1950's.

Genre research No.1 Rap/Hip-hop
Back Ground
The hip-hop genre originated in the 1970's and was developed from Disco rap. Origional hip-hop artists such as, Grandmaster flash and Keith Cowboy were the first to coin the phrase "hip-hop". The next stage of hip-hop was hip-hop culture. Common features of this culture were rappers (MC's), DJ's, beatboxer's and graffiti artists, this is where common themes of the ghetto come from in some hip-hop music videos. From the beatboxing came synthetic sampling which produced the repetitive sound which could be rhythmically rhymed/rapped over, although this is not a key part of the genre. From then, hip-hop developed into the likes of Biggie Smalls (The Notorious BIG), Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur in the early 1990's. Artists such as these focused on the rap side of hip-hop and also brought a more exclusive illustrious feel to the genre along with the free will and drug using aspects. After both Biggie Smalls and Tupac were shot dead, the genre took a turn towards gangster rap territories which is sub-genre which spurred from hip-hop and is very similar to hip-hop. Modern hip-hop artists, such as, Wiz Khalifa, Lil' Wayne, Jay-Z, Kanye west and Rick Ross have kept up the wealth and freewill themes of the genre and have also ventured into music videos which display this.

Reason for choosing this genre?
I chose this genre as I am very familiar with the artists and what they individually stand for, but also as the lyrics are good for matching visuals too as they fit my individual taste. I am considering songs from Wiz khalifa, Lil' wayne or the A$AP mob.
Conventions of genre
I believe that different genres of music divide the music video genre into smaller sub-genres which each have their conventions. So, where as a convention of the music video genre would be to either have a narrative or a montage style, I believe that the sub-genres would be what each sub-genres narrative/montage would contain.
For example, an arctic monkey's video may possess a narrative, but the narrative would carry key themes of youth, drugs, excitement and cheap thrills etc.
However, a taylor swift video may to have a narrative, but one which conveys themes of love and have a much lighter style.

Music video conventions
As with film genre's, music videos feature conventions specific only to music videos. Theorist Andrew Goodwin comprised an essential list of key features of a music video.
Firstly, Goodwin said that there is often a relation between the lyrics and visuals in the video. This aspect is evident in most music video's, for example, in 'Wiz Khalifa's music video 'Roll up' there are constant camera movements and gestures by 'Wiz' which coincide with the lyrics. As the lyrics, "Whenever you call me" are spoken, 'Wiz' is seen holding a gestured phone to his ear as seen below.

Secondly, the iconography presented in a video, as all video's do have iconography present accord into Goodwin's theory. I will give examples from the previous video for continuity. Iconography such as stylish/ fashionable clothing are used in the video to portray youth but also wealth in this video, as these are the signifiers which help to establish key themes within the video.
Thirdly, as shown in the previous three examples, close ups of the artists are required!
Penultimately, voyeuristic treatment of the female body was another of Goodwin's key themes, however I feel that this would vary between different band and their genres of music, therefore should not be a rule set in stone.
Lastly then comes intertextual references, these are references within the video which link to events that have happened or life events etc. In this video there are very few intertextual references other than ones which avid followers of 'Wiz Khalifa' would understand... for example he makes reference to his 'Gang' the 'Taylor Gang'.
